More on the Ketogenic & Paleo Lifestyle

What is a Ketogenic Diet?

A Ketogenic diet is a low-carb, moderate protein and high fat diet. It involves reducing the amount of carbohydrates you consume and replacing them with good fats. By reducing carbohydrates, the body has to look for another source of energy to which it starts breaking down fats for energy, this is called Ketosis.

It is important to ensure you are consuming good quality fats and protein on the Ketogenic diet. It is also very important to ensure you are consuming a wide variety of vegetables, nuts and seeds and small amounts of fruit.

What is the difference between Keto and Paleo?

The Ketogenic Diet restricts high carbohydrate food whereas, the paleo diet is not necessarily low carb. The Paleo diet removes grains, legumes, processed food, sugar, artificial sweeteners, dairy and not too much fruit from the diet. It is a great anti-inflammatory diet. There are a lot of similarities and we are aiming to develop and modify our meals to be Ketogenic and Paleo, many of our meals already are!

Both dietary approaches focus on removing processed, sugary food like products from the diet and replacing them with high quality protein, fats and lots of vegetables!

What are the benefits of the Ketogenic Diet?

There is a lot of research on the Ketogenic diet, it is far from new! A lot of research was done in the early 1900's for the treatment of epilepsy to conclude that it is a very effective treatment. Often people will notice a drop in their appetite as there blood sugar levels stabilise and their bodies converts to using fatty acids for energy.

The ketogenic diet is anti-inflammatory, supports a healthy weight range and decreases insulin levels. Many individuals note an increase in energy levels once they are in ketosis as they are not relying on continuous replacement of carbohydrates to maintain blood glucose levels.

Ketogenic diets are very effective for weight loss and the best part is there is no counting calories on the ketogenic diet!

How long does it take to get into a state of Ketosis?

Everyone is different when it comes to achieving ketosis. Some individuals are able to get into ketosis within 2-3 days whereas others can take up to week. A simple, cheap way of determining whether you are in fact in ketosis is by using urinary ketone sticks. The most accurate way is by measuring your blood ketone levels with a blood glucose/ketone monitor.

Aren't carbohydrates important?

Carbohydrates are a energy source for our bodies, however, proteins and fat provide energy as well as structure and repair.

Carbohydrate rich foods contain many vitamins and minerals so it is important to ensure you are getting a variety of good quality vegetables and protein to cover all your dietary requirements.  At Ketogenic Kitchen, our Naturopath takes great pride in not only providing macro balanced meals but ensuring all daily requirements for vegetables, fibre and vitamin and minerals are met too!

What is Ketosis?

Ketosis is a normal metabolic state that occurs when our bodies do not have enough glucose for energy. Our body then starts breaking down fats to ketones to which our body then uses for energy. All cells that contain a mitochondria (our little powerhouses) can use ketones for energy and often thrive on them.

What happens if I have food allergies?
